This year has been a tremendous year for the Basketball Club. The men’s team finished third in BUCS Division 2, securing their place in Division 2 for next year with the aim of winning the division with their fresh young team. They also reached the quarter finals of the Scottish conference cup, and came 5th overall in Fife and Tayside Division 1. If that wasn’t enough, the boys also managed to reach the semi-final of the Fife and Tayside Cup. The men face the issue of losing a lot of leavers this year, however their large intake of fresher’s this year looks set to breathe new life into the men’s team, hopefully giving them the spark they need to progress further in their endeavours next year.
The woman’s team had a record breaking year this year. The girls finished 2nd in BUCS Division 1, only losing marginally to Glasgow – a massive achievement considering the fact that the girls just got moved up into Division one this year! If that wasn’t impressive enough, the woman’s team managed to reach the semi-finals of the British National BUCS Trophy, and were the only Scottish representatives in the competition once they saw off Dundee in the early stages. The woman also managed to win the Fife and Tayside League and come out runners up in the Fife and Tayside Cup, only losing by a brutal 4 points.
An impressive season from both teams, which was topped off with the woman’s team coach, Anna Jablonski, winning coach of the year after she selflessly stepped up to the position after the girls found themselves coach-less early on in the season. Her hard work and dedication to the team saw them achieve the most the club has ever seen in one year.
Anna wasn’t the only member of the club to win an award this year however. Paige Onouye and Katie Dickerson were both selected to represent the Scottish Universities team, where they travelled to Ireland to compete against other regional teams.
To round off a fantastic year, one last award was presented to a member of the club. Hannah Rogers received the SSS Volunteer of the Year 2013 award for her amazing work at the University of St Andrews Basketball Club. Her efforts with the club have had a direct effect on the success of the club, changing it from a recreational sporting club to a highly competitive performance club. Hannah’s departure will be sorely felt in the club, but her legacy will remain as both teams aim for bigger and better things in the upcoming seasons.
The basketball club is a young team looking towards great prospects, with plans to expand the club and attract a wider range of players, the club is set to achieve great things in the near future.
